Holland Park Garden

Asked to bring a sense of city escape to this large north-facing shady front garden with a steep level variation up to the house, we used spring blossoming woodland trees with strong autumn colour to extend seasonal interest, a simple herbaceous planting understory with frequent bulb uplifts, and cloud hedges to soften the slopes and give year-round structure. It was important to ensure that given the significant level changes, the space did not feel too heavy. Reclaimed York stone steps led to platforms of rolled hoggin to soften the space and allow greater surface permeability.
