This Islington garden is a plant-rich haven for people and wildlife in a compact space. Working in collaboration with West Architecture who were overseeing the careful renovation of a beautiful 4 storey Georgian house including a connecting internal winter garden space at the rear of the house, we have planted as much of this garden as we could.
A pair of elegant Japanese pagoda trees give height and provide cooling, dappled shade to the south-facing terrace. Below and beyond, created a gentle matrix of suitable grasses, nectar rich plants and edibles – from herbs to a Szechuan pepper shrub in one corner. Herbs, in sunny areas and in pots, include thyme, fennel, lemon verbena and loose shrubs of rosemary. Fragrant climbers clothe the walls
The terrace by the house uses the same stone as the winter garden, giving a seamless connection between inside and outside. At the rear, a small clearing in the planting made from site-won Yorkstone paving from the original garden gives a hidden corner to enjoy the last of the evening sun.
