Ord Isle of Skye

Location: Scotland

Client: Residential

Status: Under construction

Project: Residential, Work in Progress

Harris Bugg studio have been appointed alongside Dualchas architects to bring back to life a steading and walled courtyard on the Isle of Skye.

Left abandoned and fallen into disrepair, the team are proposing that a new two storey house is located at the rear of the site, not touching the existing structure. The stone ruins will be preserved as they are, festooned with vegetation and distressed colours. These will act as a backdrop to a new verdant and intimate garden.

The materials of the house and the garden are all inspired by what has been found on site with the aim to preserve the character and memory of the place; rusted metal, local stone and weathered concrete. Even some old agricultural equipment found on site will be repurposed.

The journey into the courtyard, through the garden and into the house culminates with expansive glazing to an upper floor living area that gives views over the garden, the wall, and to the breath-taking Cuillin mountain range beyond.

The work is due to start on site in the second half of 2023.
